BRIEF INFORMATION:
Professor Johnson Obuna is trained at the University of PortHarcourt, Nigeria, where he graduated with MBBS degree. He proceeded for a specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the West African College who on completion of his residency training was awarded the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons and appointed as consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital which later became part of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki. He was also appointed a lecturer at Ebonyi State University where he rose over the years to the rank of an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
In order to position himself for the task ahead, he was opted for a training and certification with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Acquired Fistula Project, as a Fistula Surgeon. This he capped with a certificate in Assisted Reproductive Technology from India, in 2012. He was subsequently awarded the Fellow of the International College of Surgeons to complete his professional competencies in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Fistula repairs and Invitro Fertilization.
Administratively, he holds a Diploma in Strategic Management. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration. Over the years he has held administrative positions such as Former Acting Chief Medical Director of Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki; Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki; Ag HOD, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ebonyi State University and State Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Ebonyi State.
Professor Obuna is a Pastor and Church Administrator at the Redeemed Church of God. His key values are diligence, and prudent management of resources, while ensuring fairness to all staff. In pursuance of the mandate of the National Obstetrics Fistula Centre, Professor Obuna’s primary focus areas are in the five key areas of Treatment, Training, Research, Rehabilitation and Prevention of Obstetrics Fistula.
The Centres target will be to ensure excellent delivery free of charge to patients with Obstetric Fistula; opening maternity services to benefit repaired fistula clients who wish to increase their family size; ensuring access to Invitro fertilization for repaired clients with fertility problems and conducting renal dialysis for clients and other patients with such needs. On training, he intends to, in addition to continuing training of undergraduate medical and paramedical students, explore avenues with Universities in Nigeria and Overseas for Certificate and Postgraduate Degrees in Reproductive Health areas. He also intends to approach Post-Graduate Training Colleges such as West African College of Surgeons and International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FIGO) to make the Centre a training and certification institution. To this end efforts will be intensified to garner the support of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs); Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), research institutions and interested philanthropists to support the centre and activities such as vocational skills for the repaired clients while building support groups that will ensure advocacy and prevention of maternal injuries and deaths.
Prof Johnson A. Obuna is happily married, and the marriage is blessed with children.
