BRIEF INFORMATION:
Professor Henry C. Uro-Chukwu joined the services of the National Obstetrics Fistula Centre Abakaliki, in 2011 as one of the pioneer staff that was inherited from Ebonyi State Civil Service by transfer of Service. He joined Ebonyi State Civil Service as a Medical Officer in Ebonyi State Ministry of Health in 1999. He had worked as such, heading many secondary health care facilities in the State before travelling to United Kingdom for post graduate studies. On his return in 2003, he was appointed the State Programme Coordinator / Chief Executive of Ebonyi State Grassroots` Mobile Clinics. With the inception of The Governor Martin Elechi administration in 2007, the agency was drafted as a collaborating partner to the Office of the Wife of The Governor, to advance the programmes of her pet project, The Mother and Child Care Initiative (MCCI). To this effect, Professor Uro-Chukwu was appointed the Coordinator of the Community outreach component of MCCI and also as The Public Health Physician /Vice Chairman of the MCCI Maternal Mortality / Morbidity Monitoring Committee.
With the activities of the MCCI giving birth first to the State Obstetric Fistula Centre, later upgraded to the South East Regional Fistula Centre and finally with its taking over by the Federal Government, as the National Obstetrics Fistula Centre, the services of such anchor staff like Dr. Uro-Chukwu was needed. Hence in 2011 having attended the position of an Assistant Director at the State Ministry of Health, he joined the services of the Centre as the pioneer Head of Department of Social Mobilization and Diseases Control, a Department that is now known as Training, Research and Mobilization Department where he is currently a Director / Head of Department.
Professor Uro-Chukwu studied Medicine and Surgery (MB;BS) at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria before acquiring other higher degrees such as MSc. Public Health (University of West Minster, London); M.Sc (Health Policy & Health System); M.Sc (Food Chemistry & Biochemistry), M.Sc (Clinical Nutrition – University of Aberdeen, Scotland) and Ph.D (Food Science & Technology/ Human Nutrition). He has attended several short courses including a Short Course in Lifestyle Medicine and Metabolic Syndrome from Harvard University Medical School, USA and Management Skills for Project Leaders, University College London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health, United Kingdom; Fellow Royal Institute For Public Health, London and Fellow WHO-African Institute. He has served as short term Consultant to several International bodies including EngenderHealth USA and World Health Organizations.
With high scholarly output including over seventy published articles and seven textbooks in disciplines of Public Health, Health Policy and Nutritional Biochemistry coupled with research and teachings at both undergraduate and Post graduate levels spanning over two decades at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, he has attended several academic heights including his appointment in 2020, as an Associate Professor of Public Health Medicine & Nutritional Biochemistry at Coal City University Enugu and Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, Ebonyi State University. Abakaliki where he offers services as visiting and adjunct staff respectively. He has travelled to over 35 countries and is happily married.
